Personal Statement about Music Therapy

After completing my 1,040 hour internship at the Boston Institute for Arts Therapy, I became a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC).  Working primarily with children with autism and special needs in public and private educational settings, I found I had a unique connection with this population.  I then travelled to Ghana, West Africa, where I found I could make that same connection through cross-cultural music, dance, and language.  Being very petite yet extraverted, I found it natural and exciting to engage the village children in these ways!  My dream is to help grow music therapy and cultural exchange in Ghana, and all over the world.  During an undergraduate lecture at Berklee, Clive Robbins inspired me most when he said “Music Therapy is going everywhere you're going!”  This has led me to attend the Masters of Arts in Music Therapy at Berklee College of Music, graduating in May 2017.  I hope to hone my skills there as a global music therapist and ethnomusicologist, and contribute to the progressive field of integrative medicine.
